I am jumping off a boat into shark infested waters on Sunday

On Sunday I am racing in the Kemah Olympic Triathlon. It is on the Kemah Boardwalk and a sprint tri is being run at the same time. Over 1600 people are scheduled to compete. This race has become one of the must do triathlons in Texas.

They take you a mile out to sea on this boat ...

Suck it Alcatraz

... and make you jump off and swim back to shore!

Swim Exit

How cool is that?

You know what isn't cool?

A few years ago a group of buddies and me chartered a boat right in this area and proceeded to catch four (4) Black Tip Sharks that were all over 6ft long ....

Black Tip Shark - this isn't the one I caught, we ate that one.

My goal for the race is to not get eaten by a shark (-:

Any one else racing this weekend?

Thanks for Reading,

Jeff

  1. At least it's not sharktopotomus infested waters.

    Rock it!!

Btw. Pita...he added a sig to the collection of zombie killers last night. Does this gun collecting ever stop?!

    1. This is the 3rd year for the race and they haven't lost anyone -- yet!

      A sig sauer or a .357sig?

  2. Sharks are nothing. Now if it was sharktopus, then you would have reason to be worried.

    1. Very true. A Sharktopus would be of concern, even for runners as a Sharktopus can kill on land as well. But everyone knows that (-:

Of course, this entire post is a joke as I'd have a greater chance of being struck by lightening on a cloudless day then getting attacked by a shark - especially since so many people swim slower then me!! ha!

  3. How about zombie infest sharktopusses?

  4. I would have the fastest swim of my life. I'm already planning on finishing IMTX in 25 minutes because of the snakes. Now you throw in sharks and that Oly would be done in 10.

    1. Last year during a training run we saw a big ass water moccasin dive into the waterway right by the swim exit.

    2. Please tell me this happened in Kemah and not Lake Woodlands!

  5. THAT IS AWESOME!!!! I got a kick out of swimming over a big sea turtle last Sunday, but the possibility of seeing a shark during the swim? Ohhhhhh man. And the start on a boat either sounds great or sounds like the worst short boat ride ever. Have an awesome race.

    1. Luckily (or maybe unlucky?) the water is so murky you wouldn't see a shark until it was biting you.

  6. Yikes! Do they make chain-male wetsuits? That might help, but you'd end up drowning anyway. At least this way you've got a chance. Good luck, and kick some butt! Go get 'em, Jeff!

  7. I shouldn't have read these comments. I'm afraid of the critters in waters. And gearing up for first ocean tri in 2 weeks. Can I take Valium before the swim? Good Luck! Love the Kemah boardwalk!

    1. The Kemah Boardwalk is a fun place and the On Your Mark guys are doing a great job of putting on top notch, professional races in the area. Houston is lucky to have them!

  10. Does the chlorine they dump in the IMTX swim water chase the critters away? Last year a local said the place smelled like a pool the week leading up to the race.

    1. I am local and was not aware of any chlorine in the lake? It is murky and dark. You are lucky if you can see your arm in front of your face. The 2500 swimmers chase the critters away!

Don't worry about snakes in the lake, they are there - just like every lake in Texas, but they will be so far away from all the commotion. I run around the lake all the time and never worry about them - and I am a huge wimp with snakes.

Now gators on the other hand ..... kidding

  11. Swimming off a boat to just too cool, man! ...and hey, don't worry about the sharks. While they'll beat you on the swim, you will definitely take em on the bike!

  17. I hope it went well

As for the sharks, you dont have to be the fastest to elude them, you just need to need be faster then someone else
