Monday = FAIL

Have you ever had one of those days when you should have never even got out of bed?  Today was that day for me.

Aside from the Pirates crushing the Dodgers 11-5, today just sucked!

First, the air conditioning in the house decided to stop working.  We live in Houston.  It was 82 degrees at 7:30am  in my living room!!!  The best part is that we have TWO air conditioning units.  One for the upstairs and one for the downstairs.  And both of them quit working.  A/C repair is not cheap.  Good times! Bye, Bye new road bike.

Then my accountant called to let me know that my taxes were complete. Our Government is not cheap.   Bye, Bye Carbon Race Wheels.

After driving over 200 miles I finally made it home and decided I was going to try and run without socks for my planned 30 minute tempo run. No socks will equal a faster transition time.  It actually started out great.  My first two miles were done in 12:50 and I was feeling extremely strong. This crummy day was turning around for the better!  Then at about the 2.5 mile point I started to feel some minor irritation on my back right heel.  Then the minor irritation started to hurt.  My right foot was really hurting and around the 4 mile mark I sat down on the curb and took my shoe off.  Yep, I had rubbed off skin on the heel and on part of my arch.  It was raw and I needed to stop or it was going to get really bad.

Well, I was approximately 1.5 miles from my house.  I had left my cell at home and the A/C guy was going to be at the house in 15 minutes.  And no way could I even walk with the shoe on my right foot.  Sooooo ... I walked home barefoot! Took off both shoes and tried to avoid all little pebbles and other road debris.  I have no idea how people do the barefoot running thing?

Got a nice little hour on the trainer tomorrow planned and another hour of intervals in the pool in the evening.

At least 24 was half decent tonight!

Thanks for Reading,

Jeff

  1. Aw...sorry you had a rough day! I have found that the saying, "When it rains, it pours" is true more often than not. Why do bad things always seem to happen at the same time??

I hope tomorrow is a much better day for you! :)

  2. Man, you just made my day seem like a walk in the park. Btw, have you looked into the Zoot triathlon running shoes? They are designed to be worn without socks.

  3. Sorry to hear you had such a crappy day! Take care of that blister and tomorrow will definitely be a better day!

Is the AC at least fixed?

  4. I can ride my bike without socks no problem but I've never been able to run without socks. You must have been fuming the whole "barefoot" walk. Tomorrow has to be better.

  5. We went through the AC drill last summer. Yup...I said goodbye to several things for a while.

I hope your foot heals quickly and that you're back on the saddle in no time.

  7. When I moved to Houston in 1980 (jeesh, you were 4) AC went out in August during multiple 100 degree days. We used to spend the evenings at the Astrodome.
If you need a new AC, the new freon units will get you a government tax credit and electricity savings might even pay for the note on the unit (a thought)

  8. Definitely a bad start to the week! It can only get better, though, right?

  9. AHHHHHH Another great debate for triathletes. To sock or not sock. In my opinion, I know I will never poduim, just not fast enough. So, personally, I will race in comfort.

Though, your feet will get use to it and develop a tolerance for running with no socks. Keep training that way, you will get use to it.

  10. ok, you got the crappy day out of the way early in the week...now the rest will all be good. get some moleskin or blister bandaids and you'll be good to go. were you a little cranky? i need someone to be cranky this week so i can award the golden cranky. upward and onward, it's a new day!

  11. Moleskin and neosporin. Took a week for my heels to stop hurting after I rubbed them raw.

I don't care what my transition time is... I am wearing socks!!!

Good luck with the blisters, they suck on the heels man haha.

  12. I am better today .. just needed to vent. The A/C is back up an running again ... the upstairs one need coolant and the the lower one need a new fan. You Southern folks know how important the a/c is! No a/c = wet humidity in the house and it is a nasty feeling!

Going to have a good training day and hope y'all do the same!

  14. Its out of the way, that means the rest of teh week is going to treat you awesome! I tried the barefoot run thing on teh weekend, like your experience, it sucked! nice raw skin on inside of arch to remind me not to try and fix what is not broken! Have a great day!

  15. Suck it up Butter Cup! Just kidding. I go sans socks for sprint and olympic races but when you're in "the zone" of the race the blisters don't hurt till after the race. Never tried to practice for them. I always subscribe to nothing new on race day, but that might be one exception.

  16. Hang in there. I've done the same thing with the socks and shoes thing and have decided that it's better for me to have socks and just forget about the time savings!

    Hope things get better!

  20. Yikes Jeff that is a rough day. I am impressed that you even tried to run sockless. That takes some mental fortitude that I don't think i would of had in your situation.

    Tomorrow is a new day.
