Daily Trainings and a Thursday Morning 1/2 Mary

Training is going okay this week.

On Monday I was able to swim for an hour and then get in a 55 min/5.5 mi run with my wife.  Tuesday came and I was scheduled to do an indoor trainer ride and I could not.  I had the time but my body was exhausted. I went back and looked at my calendar and realized that a rest day was last used 18 days ago.  No wonder I was beat.  So I took Tuesday as a recovery day and then started Wednesday morning feeling rested and got in a hard 45 minute swim.  Then yesterday morning I got up and went for a 13.41 mile run in 2:00.  I looked at my Garmin and my 1/2 Mary split time was 1:57.  So I had a nice sub-2hr 1/2 Mary on a training run.  It was a beautiful 58 degree Texas morning!

For tonight and Saturday I have to work a CE seminar downtown.  I plan on a nice 2hr spin later tonight and then another 2hr spin on Saturday night (Annie is working - so Jeff gets to train on Sat night!).  On Sunday my Tri Club has an Open Water Swim scheduled in the afternoon so I am in for that but will also try to get a ride in on Sunday morning before the swim.  If I am feeling okay I might go for a run (30 minutes) after the swim as well.

In a nutshell, that is my week so far.  I hated taking the rest day but in hindsight it was the smart thing to do.

Also on Tuesday night I did my Fantasy Baseball draft.  My pitching staff is just dirty.  The offense is going to be average but the pitching should pick us up!

Thanks for Reading,

Jeff

  1. Jeff, from reading all sorts of other blogs and triathlon training forums... rest days are even more important than the training days. They also say good luck taking them haha! You feel guilty from not doing something but as KC says, "make time for stretching (or recovery) or make time for injury". Keep up the good work, you are killin your workouts lately! Great improvements!!!

  2. Not only do you need "off" days, you need recovery weeks. Doesnt your plan have one? You need to recharge and recover.

  3. week 1 of hundred push up challenge...DONE! Bring on week 2! OMG, you sound just like me when it comes to rest days; i hate em'! But, i do know ya gotta have one every now and then. I don't have a set rest day. I prefer to let my body tell me when it's time to rest and it does let me know. I think some people who read my blog think I go all out on all of my workouts, based on some of the comments, but not so. Easy/moderate workouts peppered in between the hard days is a good balance without having to actually take a full "rest" day. Easy days for me would be weights, abs and maybe a 10-12 mile spin on the bike or weights, abs and a 4-5 mile easy run. Great job on the half mary training run. Can't wait to see how the OWS goes and how you LOVE your xterra wetsuit.

  4. I saw the Daily Trainings in your title and thought it was about my blog! LOL

I agree, sounds like you need more than a day to rest, I basically took this week off from running and I am looking forward to getting back on the road Monday!

  5. Thanks for the input everyone - here is a quick Readers Digest/USA Today Pie Chart version of my training and plan:

My plan calls for 3 week builds and then one lesser volume week of recovery. Like, KC said, the majority of my workouts are in the moderate to easy RPE range .. as per the plan. So I have added an extra spin or easy run on some of the scheduled off days. Tuesday's off day was needed more for mental reasons then physical reasons so that is the good news. AND I have a really "clean" diet (aside from an occasional deep fried twinkie) and usually get a pretty good nights sleep.

A lot of the reason I went for so long without a recovery is because I haven't done a race in a few weeks and haven't had that type of redline intensity so I really didn't need the recovery.

  11. Not sure what a CE seminar is, but have fun...
I must have gotten confused this week, while on the road... it was a push up challenge??? I thought it was a arm curl challenge... I got up to 3 20oz curls Tuesday night....
    Guess that doesn't count..

  12. Rest days are hard for me, because I hate to take them, and when I do, I have a hard time getting back on the horse sometimes. Great run, BTW.

Deep fried Twinkie? Really? I have to get to Texas.

  13. Hi Jeff,
TGIF!! Awesome job this week!! 100 push-up challenge week one...check! We made it through one full week:)

So you do that crazy fantasy baseball stuff too!?! My hubby is in 5 leaques, which is way too many as far as I am concerned:) On the flip side, he thinks that entered way too many races this season:) Ha ha!

I hope that you have a great weekend!

  14. Good work. Rest days are a must, especially when the body tells you about it. And you did it without an injury to force you to take one...score!
